"Through the exchange program I came into contact with people from Freie Universität. They were really kind and helpful, starting with bureaucratic matters like health insurance up to finding an accommodation and other questions."
How long have you been at Freie Universität?
I came here in October at the beginning of the winter semester, and I will stay for one year.
Did you come through direct exchange or another program?
I am here through the Brazilian-German program “Ciência Sem Fronteiras.”
What are you studying?
At Freie Universität I am studying physics because I have a physics project at my home university. The program allows you to choose a subject, even though it is not your major. That is really nice.
Where are you from, and where do you study at home?
I’m from Minas Gerais in Brazil. I study chemical engineering at Universidade Federal de Alfenas, and I already have one degree from there.
Why did you choose Freie Universität?
Freie Universität is one of the important universities in Germany, and I was also very interested in Berlin.
What do you especially like about Freie Universität?
There is a broad offering in courses, and the classes are not too big in the field of physics. Another positive thing is the teaching method in physics. You have to hand in homework assignments every week and get feedback on them. That makes you study continuously and keep up with the subject matter. I also like it that there are many opportunities to meet people, especially other international students.
Is there anything special that Freie Universität offers for international students?
Through the exchange program I came into contact with people from Freie Universität. They were really kind and helpful, starting with bureaucratic matters like health insurance up to finding an accommodation and other questions. In the beginning a tutor showed all the new physics students around the department and helped us, too.
What do you like less?
The teaching method in physics is different from what I am used to. In Brazil we have several tests in the courses during the semester. At Freie Universität there is only one test in each course at the end of the semester. That means you have to know everything. That is a lot to learn.
Do you have any suggestions for someone new at Freie Universität?
Meet other international students. They are in the same situation as you, and they will support and help you.
Any suggestions for living in Berlin?
Berlin is a big city and has a lot to offer. There is a lot to see from history and museums to nightlife. Be curious about the city that you are living in.
